Mauguio-Carnon is a commune in the Hérault department in the Languedoc-Roussillon region, located close to Montpellier. It is a member of the Pays d’Or administrative district.
Mauguio-Carnon represents a strong identity, both through its history, culture and traditions and also thanks to its idyllic geographic situation.
Located on the Mediterranean Sea, at the gateway to the Camargue, Mauguio-Carnon is coveted for its cultural and natural wealth.
Exploring Mauguio-Carnon means becoming a part of this preserved and protected natural environment.
The Etang de l’Or lagoon, which covers 30% of the territory, is a NATURA 2000 site, recognised for its exceptional natural wealth. The fauna and flora are boosted by the generous offerings of this territory, located between the land and the sea.
Every year the lagoon plays host to thousands of migrating birds coming to feed. The lagoon waters are home to a number of common species such as eels or carp but also, and above all in terms of ecological interest, rarer species such as the Striped Bream.
Protection of its biodiversity is a priority mission and a key objective for Mauguio-Carnon which makes every effort to maintain its 8500 hectares of plains, its seven kilometres of dunes and beaches and the Etang de l’Or lagoon, all recognised for their environmental quality.
Visitor flow management is designed to enable everyone to enjoy this authentic environment while not forgetting the importance of conservation initiatives. Nature trail walks are organised by the Mauguio-Carnon Tourist Office in partnership with technicians from SYMBO (Management Syndicate for the Bassin de l’Or).
